Payload is a video game in the action genre developed by Tantalus Interactive Pty. Ltd. and published by Nokia Oyj originally released in 2005. It is currently playable on N-Gage.
Payload, released to the public in 2005, is a turn-based puzzle game. Developed for the N-Gage platform, it is a single player application aimed at all levels of gaming, from casual to hardcore. The goal of this game is to match the colored tiles, called "cubes," as quickly as possible. For each match, the player is awarded points and extra bonus points for creating a chain of consecutive matches.
At the beginning of each level, players must select the cubes they wish to match. Depending on how many cubes they can match, the player may either increase their point total or move onto the next level. To aid players, certain cubes offer additional bonuses. These include the speed cube, which gives bonus points for a fast match; and the bang cube, which clears out all adjoining cubes in its vicinity. As the game progresses, players are presented with trickier puzzles and various obstacles. These obstacles include directional cubes, which require players to match the angles correctly in order to progress further.
The graphics of Payload are appropriately cutesy and colorful, while the sound design is rather typical. The sound effects are suitably ear-pleasing, ranging from clicks as the cubes line up to chimes as the cubes explode. The music is quite light and cheerful and adds a certain amount of pleasure to the game.
The game's interface is also quite intuitive. Players can easily scroll through and rotate the cubes, as well as access the menu functions with relative ease. The game can be saved at any point, and saved games can be shared, allowing multiplayer gaming if the player wishes.
Payload is a time-consuming but highly engrossing game. The various obstacles add a new level of difficulty to the already challenging gameplay, making it an enjoyable puzzle game for anyone willing to try it out.
