R.I.S.K., released in 1987, is a turn-based strategy video game by Commodore International. The game invites players into a fantastical world where they must protect their own kingdom while conquering those of their opponents. Players employ creative tactics, like allocating resources, to outwit their foes.
One of the best-remembered elements of R.I.S.K. is its castle and fortress building. Players have to design fortified structures to protect their own territories and fend off invaders. The game includes seven different kinds of placed pieces featuring two levels of armor and as many as three walls. The pieces can be strategically arranged to best protect the player's kingdom, while also providing the offense to conquer others.
Each player starts with a substantial stack of resources, established as food, gold, and wood. As with real-world commerce, players can barter goods with one another, trading food for a certain number of wood pieces, for example. The goal of the game is to accumulate enough resources and military might to seize other players’ realms. This process is accomplished through rolling dice, and the outcome of the roll will determine how far players can advance over their opponent's land. Also noteworthy is that R.I.S.K. allows up to six players to join, which adds elements of intrigue and collaboration in the battle to take over new territories.
One of the features that made R.I.S.K. so popular is the components that come with the game. Colorful pieces, like warriors, priests, jesters, and kings, are placed on hexagonal squares. Long-lasting dice and an illustrated game board featuring a detailed map of the game's medieval territories are included.
Aside from its playability, R.I.S.K. was also praised for its attractive visuals and engaging soundtrack. The game featured several options for controlling the speed and volume of sound effects. Kids especially found the grandiosity of the game's sound appealing in spite of its sometimes slow pace.
R.I.S.K. is a perennial favorite amongst strategy gamers. It is still actively played in competitions, and it is widely recognized for its accessible yet deep game play. It remains a classic of the genre and will likely continue to bring joy to all sorts of strategy gamers for years to come.
